I think there are a lots of other cards that are basically "autoinclude if you can afford it" that are more problematic like dockside extortionist, sol ring is more notorious cause everyone has it so everyone uses it in every deck but the more and better ramp you have in your deck and the more consistent your deck becomes the less explosive sol ring feels

Group hug decks are really fun when there’s ONE at the table. And a group slug deck that’s banking off of it, like blue Braids/Kami of the Crescent Moon and Nekusar

banned? lol.... the only reason Sol Ring should be banned is if it were rare. Luckily they print it in literally EVERY SINGLE COMMANDER DECK. The only reason it should be banned is because it's IN EVERY DECK. Just don't play 1v1 commander. 1v1 commander sucks ass.

Last time I played commander some madman hit me for 8 with a guy that says "you and player hit draw that many cards", next madman went 'storm of possibilities' then passed me the turn... I was on Zada hedron grinder, let's just say they scooped quite fast when I went "make 8 mana, then make 10 creatures then make 20 treasures, then draw 20"

I play group hug kwain and it is probably my favorite deck to date. The strat is to draw every card in my deck to win amd I do this by making everyone draw a million cards. The games feel great, I either win cuz I got some crazy cards in play, or someone else gets to do something crazy amd thanks me for the cards. I never have to feel bad about anyone missing lands or top decking sadness.

I have been tempted to add some budget Group hug creatures, like the bird from New Capenna that draws a card for me and target oponent... to my Nethroi deck.

Sol ring is fine, gives colors who typically dont get access to ramp a powerful ramp card.

In addition to that pillow fort and life gain decks need a way to be checked in casual.

People don’t always win with mill either, it’s good to have options. I think that’s the main point.

Anyone who genuinely complains about sol ring probably doesn't wipe.

In my experience and opinion, there's 3 things that can make stax contentious, apart from how it generally "feels bad to play with". 1: Stopping vs. Slowing: If a stax piece makes your curve worse but doesn't stop you from eventually playing your cards, it is generally fine. A good example would be Thalia and Gitrog, its stax meant to slow the other player to give them a few turns to press an advantage. 2: Enable vs Disable: stax meant to slow players to benefit your gameplan is more acceptable than stax to just disable other players' gameplans. See thalia and gitrog again, the stax enable getting 2-3 turns of free attacks with them. As opposed to a Winter Orb, which, without an effect like Seedborn Muse, is typically just used to stop the game from moving forward quickly for everyone. 3: Answers vs. Archetype: when you have a pod, a stax piece to stop a specific strategy is fine, even good sometimes. Running solemnity because theres an Atraxa player is good actually. Running a stax deck so you can lock the game out and run the worst win con known to man is lame. All of this is, of course, subjective to pods. But I feel that fits the general opinion. Stax are a fine tool, but using one tool to try to fix everything is just a hassle for everyone involved.

almost all of my decks are Voltron...also i don't win very often. I love voltron.

I feel like commander damage is a great alternate win condition. Even when someone gains 10million life you can just bop him with your commander and call it a day. I've probably noticed like from 10-20 people dying to commander damage since I started playing regular back when war of the spark dropped

My take as a stax enjoyer: With cards like Jetmir, Pantlaza, Koma, And Nadu seeing print, hard control needs to be a deck that exists. Stax doesnt exist to punish cEDH, it exists to punish decks that push the envelope of power. Cards like these are getting free advantage because the deck archetype that would punish them the most get so much hate that people avoid it entirely. Saying stax is a build that can only exist at cEDH is letting the new cracked commanders get away with whatever they want to do, which forces the format into an arms race. If the only ways to beat the new hyper resilient cards is by playing the same or more busted hyper resilient cards, the format will become something unrecognizable from what it was even a year ago. No deck archetype should be soft banned at any table, because removing the failsafes built into the game gives certain decks an overwhelming advantage state. Single target removal is getting worse, old ramp pieces like Thran Dynamo are getting crept out by thimgs like Delighted Halfling and Dockside, wincons are getting faster and less interactive. Do we want to empower these playstyles by burying their natural predators, or do we want to further tell people what they are and aren't allowed to play? Just my 2 cents.

Honestly I'm pro banning this because it would help ramp down simic, the 1 mana rocks are degenerate in a deck that can easily search them out (trinket mage/Urza legacy/etc) then use all that extra mana to ramp and draw hard. GL catching up and forming a board T4 when they constantly just E-witness+Evacuation with the 9 mana they have.

As a rant aside, i love playing against group hug decks occasionally, but man, if i go to my lgs, it is nearly a guarantee that group hug will be in every game, and i am just so tired of chaos magic.

Be patient is the correct answer. Don't always have to turn 1 sol ring. Waiting 3 or 4 turns is perfectly fast and even more safe. 😊

The idea to ban Sol Ring in Commander seems inefficient to an almost silly degree. What I mean is that even though Commander is the result of judges wanting to play around with ridiculous and unexpected mechanics, what keeps people engaged tends to primarily be the social Gathering aspect above the Magic mechanics. There are always individual cases where mechanics are a player's preferred jam, but in general the focus on mechanics leans more towards the Competitive Commander being the more enriching experience. Add to the equation that to keep coming back when losing statistically happens more often than winning, players often end up focusing on enjoying the many other aspects of the format without regard to strict wins or losses. So with Commander potentially being the format where the mechanics of competition mean the least, it seems oddly inefficient to focus on the mechanical minutiae of a single card. Especially when House Rules are so embraced that any group can say Nuh Uh! Anyone who feels that strongly about Sol Ring can opt tonot include for themselves or talk to their own groups and House Rule it out of those decks. It may be a more useful idea to change the conversation into one where the discussion isn't about whether to take a card away from everybody, and instead look at determining which recipes Sol Ring works best with. Having Sol Ring available to everyone doesn't mean everyone has to use it. It's not even super useful for every Big Mana Commander. As more cards are released and power creep keeps ratcheting everything up, the cost to spend a card slot keeps getting higher and higher. There are so many options that Sol Ring may not be spicy enough for the cost. Also, WotC does seem to be cannibalizing their own business just to eke out a momentarily passing bit of profit instead of investing in the longevity of their customer base. Corporations are often slow to learn and frequently try to overcorrect past the point of no return. It would fit that pattern of WotC getting into a panic by releasing new, ludicrous cards to attract lost customers: like a mana rock that puts Sol Ring to shame. Cards like that could a red flag milestone heralding the implosion of the business. It's easy to feel like a business will always be there, but there are still cases like TSR. That one may be extra relevant here.
